- The topic for today’s tweets is CSA in popular literature. Kicking off, with of course, Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita. #CSAAM
- The following information on Lolita, the book, is taken from Wikipedia.
- Lolita is a novel by Vladimir Nabokov, written in English and published in 1955 in Paris and 1958 in New York.
- The narrative is highly subjective as Humbert draws on his fragmented memories, while attempting to gain the reader’s sympathy. #CSAAM
- The novel has a controversial subject: the protagonist, middle-aged prof Humbert Humbert, is obsessed with the 12-yr-old Dolores.
- #CSAAM its not only about the body that gets abused. Its also about the heart that gets bruised. Yet, Jesus heals. Trust in Him.
- After its publication, Lolita attained a classic status, becoming one of the most controversial examples of 20th century literature.
- At the end, Humbert refers to himself as a “maniac” who “deprived” Dolores “of her childhood.”
- The name “Lolita” has entered pop culture to describe a sexually precocious girl. #CSAAM
- The novel was adapted to film by Stanley Kubrick in 1962, and again in 1997 by Adrian Lyne. #CSAAM
- Lolita is included on Time’s list of the 100 best English-language novels from 1923 to 2005. #CSAAM
- The protagonist, Humbert Humbert, a literary scholar, has harbored a long-time obsession with young girls, or “nymphets”. #CSAAM
- At one point he listens to the sounds of children playing & stricken with guilt at the realization that he robbed Lolita of her childhood.
- The novel continues to generate controversy today as modern society has become increasingly aware of the lasting damage created by CSA
- Vladimir Nabokov had translated Alice in Wonderland into Russian. He even called Lewis Carroll the “first Humbert Humbert.”
